Shoreline Litter Drop-off Site at the Aquarium

The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup is collaborating with Ocean Legacy to install a new shoreline litter drop-off bin located at the Vancouver Aquarium. This gives shoreline cleanup leaders in Vancouver the opportunity to drop off the litter they find on shorelines so that it can be reused or recycled through Ocean Legacy’s Marine Debris Solution Centre.

We will be accepting debris from cleanups in the following two categories:

Hard Plastics, including:

  • Water bottles and other clear plastic bottles (Packaging code #1)
  • Hard mixed plastics such as containers, small jugs, or shampoo bottles (Packaging codes #2,4,5)
  • Small pieces of fragmented plastics
  • Hard Plastic Fishing Buoys
  • Toothbrushes, straws, lighters, tampon applicators
  • White polystyrene (Styrofoam #6)
  • Single-use foam items such as take out containers, beverage containers, or plates

Foam, including:

These items will be transported to Ocean Legacy where they will be further sorted for repurposing, upcycling, and recycling.

Unfortunately, at this time we CANNOT take:

  • Glass
  • Hazardous materials
  • PVC materials or pipes
  • Cigarette butts

Other materials such as paper or soft plastics can be recycled at local recycling depots.

Drop-off Instructions

The Shoreline Litter Drop-off Bin is located on the North side of the Vancouver Aquarium building, outside near the Aquaquest entrance. If you follow the driveway towards the security trailer, on your right there will be a green gate. Enter through this gate and the bin is located directly in front of you.

The bin will be available for drop offs 24/7, 7 days a week. If you have any questions about the bin’s location, give us a call at 1-877-427-2422 during office hours. If you are planning a drop off after the Aquarium is closed to the public, give security a call at 604-805-8327 and they will be able to assist you. The security trailer is also located on your left as you walk down the driveway. If you know in advance that you will be coming by, give us a call or send us an email at [email protected] and we will make sure security is expecting you.

Thank you for looking after your local waterways and ensuring that trash is not only kept off shorelines, but out of landfills too.
