Classification Capers! This assignment encourages exploration, observation skills, and helps students to develop an understanding of classification by identifying similarities and differences.
We highly recommend allowing the students time for free exploration. The Aquarium is a highly stimulating environment and if students are not given this time to roam and discover then they may be distracted and overexcited throughout the more structured part of this lesson. This also provides a chance for students to tune-in to the theme of the lesson, so remind them to keep their eyes peeled for animals that share common characteristics. Ensure students remain within their small groups, accompanied by adult chaperones at all times.
In small groups, guided by an adult, students will choose a gallery within the aquarium and observe its inhabitants. With the worksheet provided, they will choose 4 animals that share a similar characteristic and draw them.
This activity can be adapted to suit the needs of your classroom, and there are several ways to re-imagine the activity for different learning types.
For example, instead of drawing, students may take photos, act out their animals, or create riddles for their classrooms.
Possible Discussion Questions:
- What gallery did you visit?
- What animals did you choose to group together? Why?
- What were some characteristics that were different amongst the animals you chose?
- What purpose does that characteristic have for the animal?
- How do humans interact with this animal? Do we share any of its characteristics?
- What kind of environment did you find this animal in? Can you think of any animals from other environments that share the same characteristics?
In this lesson students will use the lens of a scientist while exploring the Aquarium. Students will consider questions like ‘what animals have similar characteristics?’ and ‘how could we group them together?’. This learner- centered activity introduces the concept of classification in a supportive, structured manner.
