6. Oceans and People
No matter where we live, we are all connected to the ocean. There are over 7 billion people on the planet and each one of us has an impact on the health of the ocean, just as the ocean has a huge impact on us. The ocean provides us with necessities like oxygen, fresh water and the ocean even provides us with food. Even if you do not eat seafood, fishmeal is used to feed chicken and pork or to fertilize plants that we eat.
Fish and other seafood are good for nutrition. Fishing helps create jobs and contributes to the economy. The ocean is a source of minerals, energy, and medicines.
The ocean provides us with the opportunity for activity like water skiing, tubing, or surfing. It can help inspire artists or it can help people relax. People travel across the ocean in cruises or whale watching trips and products that we buy online or in stores may be shipped to us from all around the world. The ocean has a role to play in our daily lives.
It is easy to forget in our day to day lives that we are not separate from nature but a part of it.
Human action has a very big affect on the health of the ocean. Right now, many of our actions are hurting the ocean. We are causing major changes to the ocean! Complete the following activities to earn badges and understand how humans impact the ocean.
