What to Expect in Haida Gwaii

Haida Gwaii is the traditional territory of the Haida people and is located 100 kilometers west of the northern coast of British Columbia, Canada. It is an isolated group of over 200 islands, large and small, totaling approximately 3750 square miles or 1,000,000 hectares. Haida Gwaii is the most isolated landmass in Canada. Sometimes referred to as the Canadian Galapagos, the islands are a natural laboratory for studying evolution. Several species of plants, lichens and moss are unique to Haida Gwaii. Haida people have occupied Haida Gwaii since time immemorial. Their traditional territory encompasses parts of southern Alaska, the archipelago of Haida Gwaii and its surrounding waters. Pre-contact population was in the tens of thousands in several dozen towns dispersed throughout the islands. Haida Gwaii remains an area rich in cultural history and ecological diversity.
