Welcome to Vancouver!

Vancouver is within the ancestral, traditional and unceded territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-waututh) Nations. A seaport city boasting a thriving arts, theatre, music and culinary scene, Vancouver is proud of its accessibility to outdoor spaces including mountains, lakes and the Pacific Ocean. Greater Vancouver is the 3rd largest city in Canada with over 2.5 million residents.



OCEAN LITERACY SERVICE TIMELINE:

Wednesday October 10th: Flights to Vancouver. Arrival time is flexible—please be ready to start programming October 11th in the morning.

Thursday October 11th- Monday October 15th: Full Programming Days

Tuesday October 16th- Thursday October 18th: Tentative trip extension

Friday October 19th: Flights home.

GETTING HERE:

You will be receiving an email with details on how to book your flights with Ryan.


ACCOMMODATION:

We will be staying in the HI Vancouver Downtown Hostel on Burnaby Street. Located in Vancouver’s West End, the hostel is within walking distance of Sunset beach, Stanley Park and English Bay. 

The hostel has a large kitchen.  

Rooms: We have booked 4-bed rooms (bunk beds) which come with a sink, towels and linens. You will receive your room assignments when you arrive. 











TRANSPORT:

Bus: We will provide you with TransLink passes to get around the city. The Trankslink pass gives you access to Buses, Skytrains and the SeaBus to North Vancouver.

Bike: You will have access to the Vancouver Bike Share Service: Mobi Bikes. This pick up/drop off bike system has bike stations across the city.  With the promo code give to you  by your coordinators, you will be able to buy 24 hour passes during your time here in Vancouver. Please take pictures and #mobibikes as a thank you for this service!

  • To use this service, you need to make an online account--a credit card is required. Please submit an expense report for your passes.
  • The 24 hour pass gives you unlimited 30 minute rides. If you go over this time limit, you will receive an overage fee. Ocean Bridge will not cover these fees.

Google Maps Time Estimates from the Hostel to the Aquarium:

Walking: 40 minutes

Biking: 12 minutes

Bussing: 30-35 minutes

Weather in October in Vancouver is variable—it could be beautiful and sunny but it could also be grey and rainy. It usually rains about half the days in the month of October.

Average October temperature: 10 oC

October average high: 14 oC

October average low: 6 oC
