Biodiversity means maintaining the diversity of species in our environment, especially in our forests, marshes, lakes, rivers and oceans. It is crucially important to maintain biodiversity in industry, such as forestry, by planting differing types of trees and fostering ground level flora instead of replanting the same type of tree over and over again. Biodiversity is currently threatened by the clearing of forests for farm land or for replanting of trees good for cutting, the pollution and acidification our oceans and rising water tables.
I feel the biggest obstacle in the way of making change is opposition to change and a lack of power to make change. Often, when it comes to environmental issues, there is a large opposition group against the protection of important land in favour of growing industry, but that is only one example of many. There is also the difficulty of amassing enough support or political power to force those in charge to make important changes to protect our oceans and our environment.
I believe that the more someone interacts with the environment, the more inclined they will be to try and preserve it. Often times this is clouded by financial interests, like in the case of workers in the oil and gas industry, for example. This is not to say that they don’t have any interest in protecting the environment, just that some people see less value in its protection when they get their living exploiting it.
