6A: Recycling Statistic Infographic, Calgary, Kelsey S.

Environment   Nov 5, 2018 by Kelsey Stephen

The statistic that I chose was only 5% of plastic is recycled worldwide. What really inspired me was the fact that people automatically assume if its recyclable it's still ok to buy, it's fine because it won't end up in the environment. No harm, no foul, right? Although that may be partially true in Canada because we all have immediate access to recycling options, in other countries this is not the case. We must shift our mindset away from even using plastics in the first place because that will have a global impact on consumerism and waste. If plastic is not recycled then it's garbage and it either takes up landfill space or ends up somewhere it shouldn't be, like the ocean. That is really the message I was trying to get across with my visual. It is up to people to shift the demand away from plastic and towards more sustainable options into the future.

I agree when you said," We must shift our mindset away from even using plastics in the first place because that will have a global impact on consumerism and waste." Also Canada can show a great example on how other countries could handle plastics, and maybe even cause a positive impact and change for others!

This is a great visual. It should be a public service announcement, honestly. It's simple and easy to understand, giving tips that are easy enough to apply, and the quote explains the relevance.
