Plastic Mockumentary: A challenge worth tackling, Fort McMurray, Jeremy

Environment   Oct 26, 2018 by Jeremy Christopherson
  • How do you view plastic?

"Plastic is material consisting of any of a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic organic compounds that are malleable and so can be molded into solid objects." - Wikipedia

Plastics have been a very useful material in terms of many products because of their properties. However, the slow rate at which they biodegrade poses a threat to the many natural environments across the world, and in particular the oceans.

  • What are the positives of plastics?

Plastics are low-cost and have a number of properties including durability that make them a useful material in construction and various products.

  • What are the negatives of plastics?

Plastics are very slow to decompose, in certain cases up to 1000 years. The widespread use of plastics across the world and their contamination of various ecosystems threatens the global sustainability.

  • Is there a feasible solution Canada can make towards making an impact on the plastic problem?

Canada can continue to work with international organizations and support NGOs that strive to reduce the proliferation of plastics into the world's ecosystems. Policies in Canada can be enacted to disincentive the excessive use of plastics.

Plastic is a huge threat that we have to start taking action on, sitting and waiting on others is no longer an option since our window to make a change is growing smaller. Those who care to help the environment need to do something instead of trying to force those who don't care to listen. Every small detail makes a difference.
