4A, Down the drain challenge, Yellowknife, NT, Abby Shears and Abby Thompson

Environment   Oct 16, 2018 by Abby Shears & Abby Thompson

What types of things went down our drains:

  • Water
  • Soap
  • Tooth paste
  • Hot chocolate
  • Coffee
  • Milk
  • Pee
  • Shampoo/Conditioner
  • Small bits of food

Volume estimation:

About 700L for the both of us

How much of this waste water is entering the ocean:

Less than 1% because most of our water is sent to a treatment plan to be filtered and reused within the city also the water probably would not make it to the ocean but instead to the lakes. However we may be wrong.

Other drains that lead to the ocean:

  • Pool drain
  • Street drains/sewers
  • Sinks in science class rooms

What happens to plastic microfibres in the wash:

Microfibres get released into the drain and end up in sewer systems and water treatment plants, this means that they may end up in natural bodies of water like lakes, oceans, and rivers.
