Learning from Nature: Biomimetic Design in Architectural Education Rachael B-I Biomimicry is the study of nature to emulate or be inspired by its designs or principles to solve human problems. A noteworthy example includes Velcro derived from bur hooks. This paper describes a Basic Design Studio assignment that is informed by arthropods, a rich source of inspiration. First-year architecture students were expected to offer a solution to a common human problem through the observation of the forms and behavior of arthropods. The final work required the inclusion of a mobile structure in the design. Educational benefits include the introduction of students to alternative design methods and multidimensional thinking.

Plastic Education Tookit - ELEM Stephanie The Earth’s oceans, and the interconnected cycle of water and waterways, are vital to every living thing on Earth. And yet the health of these oceans, and by extension the wellbeing of all life on Earth, is at risk due largely to the impacts of human activity. Plastic is everywhere in our oceans and it’s going to take a deep, transformational change in humanity’s consciousness and activities regarding the oceans to ensure healthy, sustainable life on this planet. Through these resources we hope youth will become leaders of change - and this all starts in your classroom.

Research Paper: Net energy gained by northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) is impacted more by diet quality than by diet diversity Stephanie Understanding whether northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus (L., 1758)) are negatively affected by changes in prey quality or diversity could provide insights into their on-going population decline in the central Bering Sea. We investigated how six captive female fur seals assimilated energy from eight different diets consisting of four prey species (walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus Pallas, 1814, formerly Theragra chalcogrammus (Pallas, 1814)), Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii Valenciennes in Cuvier and Valenciennes, 1847), capelin (Mallotus villosus (Müller, 1776)), and magister armhook squid (Berryteuthis magister (Berry, 1913))) fed alone or in combination.
